Discovering Your Winning Formula

When I was in 5th grade, I decided to be funny.
We were in the schoolyard, playing football.
A couple of the girls liked my best friend, Chester.
I wanted girls to like me too.
After we scored a touchdown, Chester said something funny, and everyone laughed. He took off running, and everyone followed him.
What I saw and what I made that mean was, “If I’m funny, everyone will like me.” After that, I put so much effort into being funny.
And by the time I was in 7th grade, I had it down. In 9th grade and in 12th as a senior, I was voted Class Clown.

The cost of this was I had spent so much energy being funny. I neglected deep learning. Because I was always looking for people to be funny too. Making jokes occupied my mind. So when I went to school, I would focus my energy on making people laugh and not concentrate on studying.

I’m very fascinated and curious about how we develop our personalities and social intelligence. Then how we mold this to get us what we want out of life. In the Curiosity Theory, we call this Our Winning Formula.
