When disaster strikes we turn to dogs for help on search and rescue operations. After all, they are called “man’s best friend” for a reason.

Rats on the other hand...have a bad reputation.

But now say hello to “hero rats.”

In Tanzania, rodents are being trained to locate and communicate with earthquake victims.

“Typically with dogs they just go around the perimeter of a debris site, but with rats, we’re hoping they can actually penetrate and go inside the debris and get closer to victims,” said Donna Kean, a behavioural research scientist.
