Producing a Lively Sound on the Flute - FluteTips 115

How would you describe your tone? Beautiful? Pretty? These are all nice words to use but I think that word that I want people to say when talking about my tone is that they hear a lively tone. I want them to think and hear a tone that is alive and full of movement.

If my tone isn’t alive then it is the opposite: dead.

I think you want to have a tone that is described as lively. How do you do this? What makes a tone lively? A tone that has movement. Movement is caused by using a vibrato called spin, even on fast notes. Spinning your notes makes music come alive to the listener. It takes a hum drum performance and makes it exciting.

You can transform your sound and take it from the ordinary to the exciting. All it takes is some careful tonal study and your tone will take on a lively timbre. This is one of those things that separates the professional from the amateur.
