AR-15 rifle recovered after carjacking suspects lead Volusia deputies on a chase
Volusia deputies arrested a pair of suspects in a Sanford carjacking Friday after they fled a traffic stop, crashed into a family’s minivan and took off running until they were spotted by a resident in the area who called 911.
The incident began around 3:30 p.m. on State Road 415 in Osteen, where a deputy attempted a traffic stop on a gray Dodge Charger traveling 76 mph in a 45 mph zone. When the deputy activated his lights, the Charger sped up and fled out of sight. The deputy radioed in the fleeing vehicle and backed off.
Minutes later, the deputy arrived at SR 415 and Fort Smith Boulevard to find the Charger had crashed into a Toyota minivan, causing the minivan to roll on its side with two adults and a 2-year-old child inside. Thankfully, all three occupants were alert and reported only minor injuries.
The occupants of the Charger were gone, and witnesses indicated they ran north. Left behind on the front passenger seat of the Charger was an AR-15-style rifle.
Deputies with K-9 units on the ground and Air One overhead began conducting an exhaustive search of the area, and a reverse 911 call was sent to residents within a 2-mile radius. The suspects, identified by Sanford PD as Javaris Jacques Manning (DOB 7/4/1994) and Quanterrius J. Lane (DOB 1/14/1999), were not immediately located.
Around 6:15 p.m., a resident in the area called 911 and reported spotting two young men running through his yard. He said he told the pair to stop running and make contact with law enforcement. Deputies responded to the area and soon spotted both suspects in the area of the Walmart at SR 415 and Howland Boulevard.
Manning surrendered while Lane took off running toward Walmart, where he was taken into custody seconds later.
Deputies charged Manning with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and resisting law enforcement without violence. Lane was charged with resisting law enforcement without violence.
Sanford PD also charged both suspects with carjacking with a firearm, and Manning was additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Both were transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where Lane was being held on $21,000 bond and Manning on $28,500 bond as of this writing.
