The Anti-Masonic Party
Abstract:
This discussion focuses on the Anti-masonic party that developed in the 1820s and 1830s. After the disappearance of New York citizen William Morgan, this party, led by John Quincy Adams, nearly won the 1828 Presidency, only narrowly being defeated by Andrew Jackson. It continued its political rise as it seemingly brought Grand Lodges to justice, demanding the surrender of their fraternal charters. The Anti-Masonic party would reach its greatest height with the Pennsylvanian politician Thaddeus Stevens who famously sought to end the Freemasons. The party remained a powerful political apparatus for nearly 20 years before dwindling out in 1845.
