Huge inferno erupts at Russia’s biggest pipeline in latest mystery fire to hit country

A huge fire has ripped through the world’s second largest natural gas field – the latest in a series of mystery blazes in Russia.
The inferno could be seen from miles away as smoke billowed into the sky.
Flames had taken hold in Urengoy, Russia’s largest gas field, located 3,500km east of Moscow.
Officials in the region confirmed the fire had been extinguished this morning.
Questions remain on what caused the inferno and how much damage has been caused to the site’s structure.
It is unknown how the incident will impact gas supplies in Europe, where high prices already are causing chaos.
The site’s operator Gazprom claimed the fire was caused by depressurisation.
A spokesperson from the company said: ‘The fire occurred at 2:30 am on June 16.
‘There were no casualties.
‘At 4am the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire was a depressurisation [of a pipeline].’
There was no ‘immediate’ impact one gas supplies, the spokesperson added.
