As a guitarist and singer, no matter what genre, you deal with the reality of having to sing loud and adding "edge" and personal character to your voice. But this kind of belting (or even shouting or screaming) puts a lot of strain on your voice and lead to hoarseness or permanent voice damage.

I sang professionally for years, in all kinds of genres and formats, often singing the WRONG way. By my late 20s, I had damaged my vocal cords and needed vocal surgery not once, but twice!

Many stars have needed voice surgery due to improper technique and issues of vocal overuse and abuse, including: Adele, Meghan Trainor, Sam Smith, Elton John, Bjork, Keith Urban, Michael Buble, John Mayer, Steven Tyler and more.
