if you keep discover egg-bearing females in the tank, but never find eggs in the spawning media offered, you only have one chance to get the eggs. you to take them from the female.

since the female medaka carry the spawn with them for a while until the egg shell hardens, you have a good chance of catching the pregnant females with the net and stealing the eggs. give the ladies some time to do this. not every medaka strain spawns in the early morning hours and the fertilized eggs take one to two hours to harden. it is important to catch the females carefully and not to injure them under any circumstances. the fish remains lying on the tissue in the flat net and the eggs remain protected between the anal fins in the a fold and are connected to abdomen by kind of umbilical cord. the eggs can therefore not be removed by rubbing the the net, if the eggs occasionally loosen throught= the fidgeting in the net, it is more of a coincidence

when netting with a flat net, as it is common in japan, you can catch the medaka famle and lay her on her side in the net directly above the basin since the net lies almost flat, the fish cannot get caught and remains on the surface

you can now wipe the eggs from the back to front with a suitable object. if you do no tuse the cotton swabls several times, the cotton swab remains somewhat sterile during use. some Japanese breeders also strip the eggs with a fingertip, the female is fixed in a fold of the net so that the rough fingertips can loosen the eggs better. the procedure must not injure the female's abdomen.

removing the eggs requires a steady hand and a good routine of handling the net. if it doesn't work right away, or if you're not sure you'd better stop trying. the female should then be immediately released into the tank.

when releasing the female, be careful not to flush the eggs out of the net. now you have to retrieve the spawn with your own fingers, because the spawn sticks to the rough skin and can be separated and freed from the adhesive threads by carefully rubbing the cluster of eggs between your fingers.

a disadvantage of the this method of collecting eggs is the growing distrust of the pregnant females of nets and the appearance of the keeper at the pool. the multiple catching and removal of eegs from the female means severe stress for your medaka and it takes at several days for a females to show normal behavior again. i only use this method to harvest the eggs when all other methods fail.
