Performance Notes:

Franz Schubert’s piece, while originally written for a setting of a secular poem, “The Lady of the Lake,” is likely better known for a later adaptation of the melody to the text of the Catholic prayer, “Hail Mary.” This came about probably because the poem begins with the phrase, “Ave Maria.” Since that time, this setting of the Latin prayer has been and remains perhaps the most popular among the dozens of musical settings of the text.
The tempo is quite slow, and may be felt at the level of the eighth-note, rather than the quarter-note. While the accompaniment is a series of arpeggiated sextuplets, the melody is subdivided largely in duplet rhythms. Care should be taken to discern between the two and to execute those duple rhythms precisely.
