Calculating calories is an important skill to master in chemistry. It is also a very easy to do!
Heat energy is a measured in calories. A calorie is defined to be the heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. The energy in food items is stored in the chemical bonds. When these bonds break the energy in those bonds is liberated and transferred into the surroundings. Calories are measured in a device called a calorimeter. When a reaction is conducted in a calorimeter the amount of energy released in a chemical process can be measured by monitoring the change in temperature of the water in the calorimeter.
