South Korea attempts to 'normalize' relations with Japan to deal with North Korea's missile program

South Korea is looking to mend fences with Japan, at least when it comes to security matters. Seoul is seeking help in addressing escalating missile and nuclear threats from North Korea.

The problem is Japan occupied the Korean peninsula during WWII and used forced labor for manufacturing. They're even responsible for several kidnappings to mainland Japan, including a princess from the formal Korean royal family. Due to strict cultural norms in regards to honor and respect, their cultural pride make it difficult for both sides to come to the negotiation table.
