McNary AZ

Tom Pollock built the Apache Lumber Co in 1916. Pollock named the site Cooley after Army scout Corydon E Cooley. The Co floundered, it was sold to W.M. Cady & James G. McNary, owners of a mill in McNary Louisiana Cady & McNary moved Lock stock & barrel to the newly named McNary AZ.
By 1929 w/the promise of steady work, a good living conditions & great weather, 700 black migrants relocated to McNary AZ.
McNary had a Negro quarte called "the hill", a Spanish-American quarter, Navajo & Apache quarters
McNary became known for its diversity. A fire destroyed the mill in 1979. Many subsequently moved away.
