New Rules for Social Security Disability in the Era of COVID-19

How can you increase your chances for an early Social Security disability approval despite the delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic?

Like every government agency, the Social Security Administration has changed its processes and procedures on the fly due to the pandemic. Social Security is still accepting disability applications but you need to adapt to SSA's new reality.

As I discuss in this video, you should avoid using SSA's "800 number" to apply by phone.
Instead, start your application online at https://www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability/.

Second, you need to be very direct in helping the disability adjudicator understand why you believe you are disabled. Look at SSA's listings (see https://meetalisting.com) and identify by listing number one or two listings that may apply in your case. If your case is not "listing level" don't worry, you can still win at a hearing but non-listing level cases are rarely approved early.

Third, make a list of your medical providers and call each one to ask for the mailing address for medical records. I can't tell you how many times a deserving claim has been denied simply because the adjudicator's request for medical records never reached its intended destination and the adjudicator made a decision without the benefit of needed records.

Finally, understand that the disability adjudication process may take longer because productivity at the adjudication level may be down. If you try to go back to work, keep very accurate records of what you did, who you worked for and how long you worked. Unsuccessful work attempts of less than six months may help your claim because they signal to the judge that you are fighting the idea of being labeled as "disabled."
