With this mix already on the shelf, you can go from zero to cookie in just 20 minutes. Making your own mix is not only less expensive but increases the quality of the food you create.

Making mixes for the convenience of later use is a fabulous use of my (Marie's) time. Having 7 children, time is my rarest commodity. I have been gifted cookie jar mixes multiple times over the years but I had never heard of anyone who stocked them in their personal pantry for later use. I started considering the value of this idea. I am very partial to a good cookie. I had many recipes that I already loved but I started trying recipes that were made specifically for in a jar. After I tried enough of them I realized I could just modify the recipes I already knew and loved to work in a jar instead. I found them to be so easy that my daughter could make them at just 5 years old. (We did the oven portion for her.) Now, I rarely buy a store-bought cookie because a homemade batch is just a mix away.

It is so easy to make these cookie mixes. You just layer the dry ingredients in your container; I like to use quart-sized canning jars. Put your lid on it and store it in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months, until you are ready to use it.

When you are ready to make them you combine the contents in your container and wet ingredients gradually. Mix your wet ingredients together. Dumping out the sugars first and mixing with the wet ingredients. Pour out the flour and mix again. Lastly, mix in the oatmeal and the remaining ingredients. Mix well.

Tip: I have just dumped the whole jar in before and it works okay but the flour tends to absorb the wet ingredients so the sugars don't "melt" as well. This makes for a much drier dough that is harder to shape.

Roll the dough into balls. Place them on a cookie sheet spaced enough for a little growth and flatten slightly. Bake in the oven, on the middle rack, at 350 degrees for 7-9 minutes. Take them out of the oven when the edges are light brown and the top is just barely shiny.

The raisin and chocolate chips could be replaced with other flavored chips, dry fruits, and nuts.
