Sheriff’s deputies were called to a DeBary neighborhood around 9 Thursday night, where a man was armed with a gun and a knife, threatening to kill himself.

The 38-year-old man was despondent over relationship issues and was eventually located in a white Ford in the parking lot of a nearby Circle K on Charles R Beall Blvd.

This call lasted for more than eight hours as deputies patiently worked to de-escalate the situation and bring it to a safe conclusion, which they did.
Deputies set up a perimeter and evacuated the Circle K, while our well-trained crisis negotiators talked by phone with the male subject for several hours, trying to disarm him.

A counselor from SMA HealthCare also arrived on scene to talk with the man.

After hours of reassuring the male by phone, deputies saw him emerge from his car, pointing a handgun at his head and holding a knife to his neck.
At that point, deputies used less-lethal impact munitions – rubber balls shot through a shotgun – but it had no effect on the male and he retreated back to his car. Then came more hours of dialogue. Finally, the man placed the gun and the knife on a nearby vehicle.

As deputies approached to take him into protective custody, he began to retreat toward the gun and knife, which forced deputies to deploy a Taser to secure him.

He was taken into custody under the Baker Act and transported to a hospital to be medically cleared -- just after 5 a.m. today.
The call involved these Sheriff’s Office units: Deltona and District 2 Crime Suppression Teams, Districts 4 and 6 Patrol Units, and Watch Commanders.

“This was a fantastic display of using de-escalation tactics in a tense situation that lasted for hours, and it worked,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “This was great work by everyone and everybody went home safe. I couldn’t be prouder of every one of those involved.”
