Bears are a family of large plantigrade mammals, meaning they walk on the soles of their feet, like humans. The scientific name for the bear family is Ursidae (or ursidés in French).

They eat many things including honey and insects, which makes them omnivores. A bear lives on average between 25 and 45 years. They live solitary over large territories.

There are five living genera of bears:

Ursus: brown bear, black bear, white bear, Asiatic black bear
Melursus: sloth bear
Helarctos: sun bear
Tremarctos: Spectacled Bear
Ailuropoda: giant panda
