They choose to boast in what they do for God, rejecting Jesus as the Messiah, they (the pharisees) teach false teachings and customs based on traditions they and their forefathers created as fence around the Law of God but what they were really doing was living in lawlessness and teaching a way that leads to destruction and indeed lead to the destruction of Israel in 70AD.
