The audience Jesus was speaking to were the Jews not the Gentiles, a large portion of His teachings were to those under the Law. in the case of Matthew 7:21-23, it was the teachings of the pharisees (false teachers and false prophets), the traditions and customs, that are the wide gate, the wide path, that leads to destruction. that it would be few among the Jews who would find life (Jesus). that it was hard for them to do so as they clung so tightly to tradtions, customs (watered downed Law) and Law keeping.
