Are you new to knitting? Looking for simple knitting stitches that use only knit and purl stitches?

This short video tutorial is for you! If you have mastered basic knit and purl stitches, you can now learn a classic 1x1 rib stitch.

It is done by alternating knit and purl stitches. You would always knit above the previous row's knit stitch and purl above the purl stitch. It is called 1x1 rib as there is only 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch in this sequence.

The trick to keeping your edge nice and neat is to always SLIP the first stitch. It is a classic technique to create a selvage for your knitting project.

To start a simple rib stitch, cast on an even number of stitches. Try to make your cast on loose enough so your stitches slide easily on the knitting needle but all the stitches are the same size and height.
