How to Decrease in Crochet

Learn how to crochet a decrease. Decreasing essentially crochets 2 stitches into one. This is a great way to decrease the size of your project and is used in many patterns.

Below are the directions for a small sample project like we have in the video.

Begin by making a chain of 11 chain stitches (ch 11). The first 10 chain stitches make your foundation chain; the last 1 is your turning chain.

Start by making 5 rows of 10 single crochet.

We are going to increase on this next row. Make 2 single crochet in each stitch below. This gives you a total of 20 single crochet.

This last row just allows more room for the stitches to stretch out. Create 20 single crochet. One for each stitch below.

Now we are going to practice the decreases by decreasing all the way down the row. Decrease (sc 2 together) 10 times. This results in 20 stitches being reduced to 10 stitches.
