The M2 was produced in 1939 by the Rock Island Arsenal, it was developed and based upon the M2 light tank, with the vertical volute spring suspension and with an unusually large number of machine guns.
The tank would not be produced for long and with tank development moving rapidly in the early stages of WW2 the tank was already obsolete and only 112 were produced, for the M2 and the improved M2A1.

Even due the tank was obsolete within a few months after it's production, it would be the basis for later, important U.S. tank designs including the M3 Lee and the M4 Sherman tanks.

The main armament was a 37 mm gun, and 9× 30-06 Browning M1919 machine guns and sloped armor.
