“FEAR NOT”
(LUKE 2:8-12)

Introduction: I think if I can summarize this year, 2020, in one word, it is “FEAR.”

fear: an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

Luke 2:8-20

3 REASONS SHEPHERDS FELT DISTANT FROM GOD

• THEY FELT UNWORTHY.

-Outcasts in Israel: Taught they weren’t good enough for God/religion.

-Their work made them ceremonially unclean (away from temple for work, essentially Nomads)

-A Religious person wouldn’t touch a shepherd—unclean *Imagine how they felt? –

Unclean
Unworthy
Unaccepted…

• THEY FELT INADEQUATE.

-Uneducated—felt they never measured up in society.

-Not as smart, popular, attractive

-Spiritually inadequate: Couldn’t keep Sabbath—sheep need protection.

• THEY FELT UNLOVED.
-Known as thieves—not allowed testify/ legal cases.

Parents didn’t want daughters/ marry a shepherd. – UNLOVED!

If people reject me AND I don’t like self—how could God accept me?

**You might be here today: Feeling Unworthy, Inadequate, Unloved…

***Religion didn’t work/ shepherds/ FEEL: Unworthy, Inadequate, Unloved—Doesn’t work for us!

Here is Our PROBLEM: Religion focuses on externals: Jesus INTERNAL!

APPLICATION

BECAUSE OF CHRIST, HE TELLS US THAT WE ARE WORTHY TO RECEIVE HIM

BECAUSE OF CHRIST, HE OVERCOMES OUR INADEQUACIES

BECAUSE OF CHRIST, HE HAS SHOWN US THAT GOD LOVES US AND CARES.

THE GOOD NEWS – (Rom. 3:20-22) – How to be right with God!
