Ukraine: Heading East
Refugees on what they lived through

‘When she’s playing in the yard and hears a whistle, she knows to fall to the ground or seek shelter. And every child knows this. They, children, are not to blame for anything’.

Evgenia, a Donetsk region resident, described how she and her daughter survived Ukrainian army shelling. When we filmed her, Evgenia and her child were in a Russian refugee shelter. Since the start of the special operation, many centres have been set up.

Volunteers, psychologists and the clergy work there. They try to help the refugees get back to everyday life, arrange for their children to go to school and recover from the constant bombing by the Ukrainian military.

In this excerpt from Ukraine: Heading East, you can listen to the memories of Donbass residents under fire.
