SINKHOLE in Tarpon Springs! #shorts

Sinkholes are pretty common in Florida. In fact, your favorite lake might have started as a sinkhole, like this one in Anderson Park. There's another one between this one and Lake Tarpon. Historically, these brought saltwater from the bayous into Lake Tarpon at high tide. The Army Corps now controls that flow with floodgates.

Sinkholes occur naturally when the roof of a limestone cave, cavern, or shaft collapses. This can happen for a number of reasons, and we don't yet have a way to forecast when one might happen. Thankfully, they don't happen often, but when they do, they can be quite catastrophic.
