Sunday Longplay - F-Zero Final (SNES ROM Hack)

This week on Sunday Longplay, my celebration of F-Zero's 30th anniversary comes to an end with the original SNES game that started it all. I find it odd that I've played all these ROM hacks of F-Zero on my channel but never the original game. However, I'm playing a different version that combines two games into one!

F-Zero Final is a hack created by Grego Lewandowski that combines all content from both the original F-Zero on SNES and its Japan-exclusive sequel BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2 on the Satellaview add-on for the Super Famicom. With the extra content comes a redesigned car and league selection menu that allows swapping between the two sets of cars with the L or R button and allows for the selection of more than three leagues to accommodate the addition of BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2's Ace League. Numerous other improvements have been made including being able to play Master difficulty out of the gate as opposed to having to unlock it for each cup individually by beating it on Expert, and the best one of all, being able to play every single track in Practice Mode as opposed to only 7 out of the original 15.

This hack also serves to expand possibilities for F-Zero hacking by allowing the addition of custom leagues and even custom palettes and backgrounds (which you may have seen in other hacks like Alternate Strike, Nebula Highway, or G-One), laying the foundation for a comprehensive F-Zero editor named FZEdit. 20 tracks and 4 leagues is not the limit, however. In my G-One video I showed off how 35 tracks could be supported, and someone commented that the theoretical maximum number of tracks can go up to 60. A 60-track hack would be amazing to see!

However, there are some bugs, the biggest one being at the tail end of this video where the game crashes after completing the Ace League on Master mode. Also, the ghost option that BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2 had for Practice mode shows up here when using the GP2 cars but is not selectable. Also, why does Sand Storm 2 play Port Town music instead of the Death Wind theme? There are also more things still in development, including reworking the Records screen to include the Ace League and (HINT, HINT) possibly add a fifth "Joker League" to include the Forest and Metal Fort tracks from the soundlink version of BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2 now that video footage of them has surfaced.

In this playthrough, I'm playing through the original 3 leagues (Knight, Queen, King) with the original F-Zero cars (more specifically the Fire Stingray), and playing through the Ace League with the Grand Prix 2 cars (more specifically the Luna Bomber).
