Uncovering Child Sex Abuse in the PA Juvenile System: New Castle Youth Detention Center

This is a series that investigates and uncovers the truth behind the walls of the Juvenile system in Pennsylvania, and an epidemic of state sponsored sexual abuse of underage youth while held as a ward of the state. Closing its doors in 2013, the scandal-ridden YDC once employed over 500 residents of the rural Pennsylvania region. As such, most of the staff was connected through the ties of small-town community life, and it created a dangerous web of complicity as adults found theselves reluctant to speak up against friends and neighbors of their small town, even was clear anuse was taking place.

Since its closing in 2013, New Castle YDC has been hit with suit after civil suit, brought by former youth residents who were victimized by the very adults charged with protecting them.

A dark cloud of shame looms over the notorious building is that is now shuttered down, and remains unoccupied- a monument to the pain and suffering of so many vulnerable children who already had deep histories of abuse, trauma and neglet before even arriving to New Castle YDC.

This series seeks to make sense of what happened, and to finally give a voice to the voiceless- including my boyfriend who was himself a victim of that system.
