Catholicism and Marijuana Pt III: The Catholic Understanding of Alcohol and Marijuana

Catholicism and Marijuana Part III explores a Catholic approach in understanding alcohol and marijuana. We first argue that marijuana use is more like binge drinking. In our second part we develop a Biblical theology of alcohol and drugs arguing that drugs are the same type of sin as drunkenness. According to the Bible drunkenness however is a mortal sin which can be the cause of one's damnation. In opposition to drunkenness Scripture calls for a virtue of sobriety and clearness of mind associated with it. We then develop a theology of alcohol as a type for life, sign of God's covenantal fidelity, and feasting in God's presence, in both the Old and the New Testaments, but in the New Covenant these themes are transformed dramatically in the Eucharistic meal.
