It appears that if you activate focus just as a captain dies the normal death animation and slow-mo camera are skipped - which is almost 10 seconds saved.

This game shows the real internal struggle that ensues from dying horribly with all your family then being possessed by some weird morally ambiguous devil creature who has a rather concerning obsession with acquiring and possessing Ring™.
