Our Rooster Needs An Attitude Adjustment!

Larry, our Lavender Orpington rooster, has an attitude problem. We have raised this bird from a chick and recently he began trying to flog us. Megan and Ragon can handle it but we won’t tolerate him getting after our kids. Before we send him to the soup pot Megan the Chicken Whisperer wants to try to correct his behavior.

From what we’ve read online there are a few methods to correct his behavior. Instinctively one wants to kick and shoo him away but that may not be the best thing to do. We are going to try the “love the mean out of him” method. Larry wants to establish himself as the dominant bird and we don’t care to engage in that fight; instead, when we wants to be ornery Megan will pick him up, pack him around, and occasionally feed him treats.

Mark, our Blue-laced Red Wyandotte rooster, who stays with the rest of our flock, also decides to jump in and teach Larry who exactly is Cock of the Walk around here.

Does any of this actually help? Time will tell. For Larry’s sake, it better!

In this video we also finish cleaning the barn stall where we’ll finish our beef steer, and move him into his new (final) home.
