What Did Martin Luther King Do for Housing?

Many people know Dr. King's many accomplishments in civil rights and racial equality. Did you also know he was instrumental in creating housing equality and fair housing laws?

This information, though something we learn about, was disturbing once I really started doing a deep dive into it. If you'd like to learn more, I've included the sources I used at the end of the video. The photos and maps, in particular, are worth looking at. We all learn that discrimination did (and does) happen, but it's another thing entirely to see it written in ink in books that were used by the government and other organizations to systematically discriminate against non-white groups.

Sadly, discrimination in housing still happens today. If you or someone you know has experienced housing discrimination, please report it. I've included the websites and phone numbers below as well as at the end of the video.

Florida Commission on Human Relations

I misspoke or didn't make clear a couple of dates in the video, despite having the information written down in front of me. 😆🙄

The Watts Riots in LA happened in August 1965, not in 1963.

The Fair Housing Act was first amended in 1974, not in 1977, to include gender.
