Why Growth Mindset - Michael Jordan shares his story on Growth Mindset
Why Having A Growth Mindset Matters -
In recent years, the term ‘Growth Mindset’, a term coined by Dr Carol Dweck, has become very popular and employers are now looking for leaders and employees with a strong growth mindset as part of their personal brand.
Let’s look at what Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball of all times, has to share about Growth Mindset.
Michael Jordan made the famous decision: a career change. How could this great sports athelete, at the pinnacle of his success, walk away from glory and success? He also did the unthinkable. He risked everything.
To understand why he risked everything, let's take a peek into the mindset of Michael Jordan, the competitor:
"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying." "I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come...I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."
"My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength."
"If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."
As Carol Dweck, author of Mindset, would say, Jordan is a prime example of the growth mindset. It's the mindset that almost every successful athlete who has had long-term success has. It says genetics may determine the starting line, but hard work determines the finish line.
Failure isn't just accepted; it's expected. When you stretch yourself past your current limits, failure is inevitable. It spawns growth. You only reach the top and stay at the top by continually improving. Winning isn't everything. Growing is. The Result of Hard Work, Not Genetics
Michael Jordan wouldn't have risked everything if he honestly didn't believe hard work conquers all. MJ was not drunk. He didn't think just because he was successful at basketball that he'd be successful at baseball. Michael Jordan shares his growth mindset story: Hard work makes all the difference, and that’s the essence of Growth Mindset. Fixed Mindset, on the other hand, believes in inborn talent and intellect.
WHAT IS A GROWTH MINDSET? WHY SHOULD I BOTHER ABOUT GROWTH MINDSET?
Your mindset is the sum of your thoughts and beliefs that determine how you make sense of yourself, your immediate environment, and the world. It shapes how you would react and respond to all the events and changes in your life. Dr Carol Dweck, a researcher and Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, says there are 2 types of mindsets: a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.
Those people with a growth mindset understand that knowledge can be acquired, intelligence and skills can be developed. With a growth mindset, people focus on improvement instead of worrying about how smart they are. They work hard to learn more and get smarter. A “growth mindset,” thrives on challenge and views failure not as evidence of unintelligence but as a great chance to learn and build upon existing skills and abilities. They believe that learning doesn’t stop the moment you leave school or university. With time and effort, their intelligence and knowledge can grow because they recognize that their effort influences their success, so they spend more time practicing or learning, which leads to higher levels of achievement. Adopting a growth mindset is not just essential in your life, it’s critical.
On the other hand, a “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are innate and cannot be changed. People with a fixed mindset only believe that they have been successful when their performance or intelligence measures higher than the standard. They constantly strive for success and avoid failure because they fear other people will view them as being innately unintelligent.
Having a fixed mindset leads to a belief that intelligence and talent are limited, so there is no use in working to develop or learn. And, because they believe they were born with a restriction on their talent, those with a fixed mindset put this same restriction on their effort– and subsequently, their success.
