what goes into designing a choreo, and what is a good way to developing the skills necessary to do so?

First I would like to start out by saying an experienced coach can be found online. An experienced coach who would be able to create a choreo for you solo or a dance team. Until you feel it, just buy a choreo and they will teach it to you. the more moves you learn, the easier for the next choreo to learn and then adapt for your own.

For a solo choreo you will need A repertoire of shines and musicality

Get a song that inspires you and which you want to perform to. Analyze it: breaks, interesting rhythms, different moods in different sections. Then figure out what you want to do for those and then fill in the blanks.

How you probably should start is get a song and then just figure out shines for 4-8 bars of it. Then grow from there.
Then when you want to make it really good you start to think about the stage and directions and moving around it.
Watch performers and analyze them. From beginner group choreos to the masters.
