We Had to Buy a New Truck on the First Day of our Big Trip!

On our very first official day leaving for our big trip, there was were of tension as we hoped things would go smoothly as we departed home base in Portland, OR. I was even joking about the truck breaking down, just messing with Katrina, before I knew what was actually in store for us and our truck!
We got off to a strong start with our cross country adventure when, 20 minutes after we left our driveway, the engine on our old truck began to act oddly, not being able to produce full power. At first, my brain was in denial, while at the same time realizing we were in real trouble. around 20 seconds later, our truck lost all power as we rounded a blind corner on a busy highway with no shoulder. Yay!

We both enjoyed a sinking feeling as we realized we were not making it any further than 20 minutes from home today as we put our hazards on and sat wondering what our next step would be.

Fortunately for us, some very kind people with a large chain and an empty cement truck found us and offered to tow us to a pull-out a short distance ahead, which we gladly accepted. Thank you random dudes!

We fortunately had AAA for towing, and after some haggling, we were able to get our truck taken to our favorite maintenance garage, and also found a trailer park with full hookups that had a spot we could use for a few days while we got ourselves sorted out.

We had a few nights of massive anxiety and poor sleep as we found that, much as I mentioned in the video, our truck was toast and needed a replacement vehicle before we could continue on. With some shopping around, we were able to find a very capable new truck that would work perfectly for our needs. It was very much on the fancy side for what we wanted, but we tolerated the warming seats and the backup camera. ;)

We had our old truck brought to Katrina's dad's driveway, where it was left until we were able to sell it a while later.

Lesson learned; if you are gonna buy something, don't find something marginal within your price range, wait until you can afford exactly what you want!
