Major General Kanamat Botashev, 63, was shot down while flying his SU-25 plane near Popasna in Luhansk province. The fighter was hit by a Stinger MANPADS missile fired by Ukrainian forces. It happened as fierce fighting continued in the city of Severeodonetsk in the province of Luhansk.

The Ukrainians claimed they had recaptured part of the city from the Russians, just days after announcing the withdrawal of strategic troops from the city.

Serhiy Haidai, Governor of Luhansk Province, said that the defenders of the city have recaptured a fifth of Severodonetsk and can hold it.

"As soon as we have enough long-range Western weapons, we will completely push the Russian army out of our position," he said.

"And then, believe me, Russian infantry, they'll run."

PUTIN is facing a major defeat in Ukraine, when too many Russian generals and colonels were killed in Ukraine, many areas and cities were "retaken" by the Ukrainian army and declared victory.
