The history of the Angelo Azzurro
The story of the Blue Angel, the Italian party cocktail of the 1990’s and 2000’s drunk while the speakers pumped house music, has remained practically obscure until recently. Let's say that no one had really wondered if that drink had a real story.
What is the cocktail symbol for us of the discos together with the "B52 cocktail" was actually born as a symbolic drink of the first Roman LGBTQ+ evenings made in small clubs.
After months of research Alessandro Barbero, was able to trace its origins.
Its name (Blu Angel) refers to the fact that it "makes you fly". The cocktail was created in the 1980s as a symbolic drink of the first Roman LGBTQ+ evenings made in small clubs and its creator is Giovanni Pepè aka "Mammina". The Angelo Azzurro is a Roman cocktail of a Rome no longer in the Dolce Vita era, and in the mood for sexual freedom, subcultures and crazy parties.
To quote the creator:
"My name is Giovanni Pepè and Mammina is how some friends started calling me after the military. When I arrived in Rome from the province of Naples that name remained." Mammina was one of the first known bartenders in the capital. He worked behind the counter of the Alibi, at the time LGBTQ+ disco club, in the first LGBTQ+ neighborhoods and at the Angelo Azzurro Club, in fact. He is now 69 years old.
The Angelo Azzurro club, in the middle of Trastevere area, no longer exists today. In its place a few years ago came a vampire-themed place, then that also closed. "I invented the Angelo Azzurro cocktail for the opening of the restaurant in 1980," Mammina quotes. It was intended to be the pool-colored symbol of one of the first LGBTQ+ venues.
