Smallpox is the first infectious disease eradicated through vaccination. Throughout history, it occurred in serious outbreaks, the most famous one being in the 18th century, claiming lives and causing devastating sequels to the survivors on the face and all over the skin with scars from the pustules that did not disappear besides the loss of vision. It is estimated that in the 18th century there were sixty million smallpox victims in Europe alone (Ministério da Saúde, 2004).
In 1798, Edward Jenner discovered the smallpox vaccine and showed the world the solution for the disease.
