The horses sniff around their dead herd mate. A vigil that was kept from when she was injured

Our horse was in a fatal accident today.
She was down in the creek when she got up her insides (stomach and small intestine fell out) and she managed to make it to another paddock where she lay down with her large bowel hanging out and we took care of her as best we could until she died. The vet arrived shortly after her death.
It appeared she may have slipped into the creek, as we found parts of her flesh on some pointy bits on a knot on a log in the creek. The vet thinks it perforated her midline and when she moved to try and get up, finished tearing a giant gap in her midline. She said she wouldn't have lasted long, maybe an hour. So I must have found her shortly after it happened. The herd were all standing facing her.
Later they were surrounding her on the ground, until we humans came and they moved off a bit. They returned when we left.
I did try to find someone with a gun to put her out of her misery, but there were no quick fixes so, we just tried to help her as best she could and she died with her chin in my lap.
