We Got Puppy Fever! Our New Livestock Guardian Dog.

This is Virgil, our new livestock guardian dog! Virgil is an 11 week old Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. With our goat herd continuing to grow we decided to invest in a little security for the critters and when this guy is all grown up he’ll do a great job of keeping a watchful eye over the fields. There’s going to be an adjustment period as he gets familiar with the goats, chickens, and other dogs, and there will be some training that we’ll have to do, but we think he’s going to fit right in here at the GWP.

We had been considering getting a LGD for a while but it was always more of a “future” thing rather than a “present” one. When an opportunity to get a LGD from the local animal shelter presented itself we jumped on it, but it wasn’t meant to be. However it got our minds working and we decided to go ahead and find a puppy so we will have a trained LGD when we really need one next spring.
