Police say they will have a “large presence” at the city’s beaches throughout the summer, following a Memorial Day brawl on Walnut Beach.

Police said at least some of the officers who responded to that incident were assaulted, but they did not say how many were hurt or the extent of their injuries. At least two officers’ body cameras were knocked off during the scuffle, according to police.

“We will have our community policing van out and we will continue to take enforcement action on alcohol, marijuana and parking violations as well as any other violations of ordinances to provide a safe and comfortable environment for everyone at the beach,” police said in a statement posted to the department’s Facebook page on Wednesday.

Portions of body cam footage from the Memorial Day incident that police shared on Facebook show officers struggling with a large crowd at the beach. The scene shows a pile of people struggling on the ground with a large number of onlookers, while one man repeatedly punches one of the people in the pile.

One officer can be seen struggling with a person on top of the pile of people wrestling in the sand. Another officer appears to stumble back in the crowd, while another officer attempts to intervene with the man punching one of the people on the ground. The officer appears to be knocked back as he grabs the man by the arm, which apparently knocks the body camera off.

In another clip shared by police, several young men appear to be examining a body cam left on the beach sometime after the fight.

“We are looking to identify the suspects in these videos and we are looking to pursue criminal charges for the theft of the cameras and other applicable charges related to the disturbance,” police said in a statement.
