Crabtree Falls, NC -- 4K Cinematic

Typically Crabtree Falls is an easy shorter hike near Old Fort, North Carolina off the Blue Ridge Parkway and a very popular hike for Asheville locals. This loop hike can be about 2.7 miles. There are some smaller creek crossings, it can get muddy, and the way down to the falls can be steep, so wear proper hiking shoes. As you approach Crabtree Falls, the trail goes over a small bridge spanning the creek that Crabtree Falls feeds into. The falls themselves were much taller than I expected or had seen in photographs. I was very pleased to see such a great waterfall as the payoff.

Crabtree Falls is off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The BRP in the winter is subject to close depending on the weather conditions. This particular morning, my friend Lindsay and I parked at a turnoff near MM342 and hiked along the closed parkway (due to snow/ice) until we reached the trailhead. It was a long but easy hike up the closed Parkway. We had the falls to ourselves all day. We did not see another person the entire time besides a Park Ranger. This is rare for Crabtree Falls because it's such a popular waterfall. We bumped into the Park Ranger driving through the closed gates on the BRP towards the beginning of our hike, and he was friendly and "glad to see two people from South Carolina making the long trip" to hike the falls in the snow. We proceed up to the trailhead, did the full loop counter-clockwise, and came back out to the BRP, and walked back to our parked car around Mile Marker 342. Our trip which normally is a 2.7-mile hike added an additional 8.3 miles hiking up the close BRP, which put us at an 11-mile day. This is a small price to pay to have such a popular waterfall uncrowded. This is one of the WC 100 Challenge.

Disclaimer: Flying Drones is Illegal in National Parks. The Blue Ridge Parkway is considered a No-Fly Zone. All drone footage was shot outside of the Blue Ridge Parkway off of Hwy 80 near Lake Tahoma. I then used some "movie magic" to edit the video to appear like it was near the BRP. I did NOT fly illegally.
