Basking sharks are the second largest living shark and fish. They reach up to 40 ft (12 m) in length and weigh as much as 11,000 lb (4,990 kg)! That is over 2x length and 5x the mass of the average great white. Basking sharks are one of three filter-feeding sharks, along with the whale shark and megamouth shark, meaning they sift out small plankton (such as krill) from the water instead of relying on teeth.
