A BBC Radio adaptation by Geoffrey M. Matthews of the novel by Brian Freemantle and sequel to CHARLIE MUFFIN.

Some time ago, Charlie Muffin was one of the best operatives in British Intelligence, but when a new regime took control of the Service the scruffy-looking working-class Charlie was considered a relic by his new arrogant upper-class bosses and fellow agents, no longer of value and to be gotten rid of as soon as possible.

An apparent defection by a high-ranking Soviet Intelligence official, whom both the British and American Intelligence services wanted desperately, left them no choice but to call on Charlie to make the defection happen. However, the defection proved to be an elaborate KGB trap; the directors of both MI5 and the CIA and 200 British and American agents were captured. Only Charlie escaped and went into hiding, along with his wife and the $1,000,000 meant for the supposed defector.

Now months later, Charlie has secretly returned to England, supposing that the heat has died down, but a careless mistake on his part puts him back on the radar of both his former Service and the CIA. both of whom want him either captured or dead...preferably the latter.

And if things weren't complicated enough, the son of his former boss needs Charlie's help in protecting a collection of Imperial jewels on load to a museum from the Soviet government, so maybe the KGB may try to get into the game.

Here's hoping Charlie keeps in mind his former boss's first rule: Always secure an escape route ...
