Legacy Conversations SADF – Buttons Heyns (32 Bn) – Episode 1 Childhood and School of Infantry 1981

Buttons Heyns speaks to us about his time in the South African Army (1981- 1990). In this episode, he speaks of his childhood in Namibia and being called up to the School of Infantry (Oudtshoorn). During this time, he assisted the victims of the Laingsburg Flood.
After graduating as an officer, he served in 32 Battalion for five years (next episode – between 1981 to 1986). He then went back to the School of Infantry as a company 2IC. After that, he spent two and a half years as Private Secretary for the Minister of Defence (July 1987 to December 1989). After a year of being 2IC at 111 Battalion, he resigned his commission as a Major. A fascinating conversation filled with humour. If you have questions for Major Heyns, leave them below.
