The Game Time Struggle is real!

We are a homeschooling family with five kids at home, six kids total. Our channel is about large family life, homeschooling, and finding the blessing in everyday. I am currently homeschooling a teenager, two elementary aged children and a preschooler. (I am also homeschooling our toddler-but some people don’t consider that homeschool-I do!)

My kids are obsessed with video games. I have fought this obsession for YERAS! I don’t care for video games at all. My video game experience is very limited. Anything beyond Mario kart I am useless.

I had to get to one of those if you cant beat them join them sort of things. It never matters how much game time they get. They always want more game time. They can play video games for two hours, and they will have a meltdown if its time to go do something even if it is something fun!

After that I cut off all video games in the house! That didn’t last very long.

I have figured out a hack to the video game time struggle in my house! I put together a whole bunch of popsicle sticks-my kids are happy because they get almost as much game time as they want, and I’m happy because I am seeing things still get done.

Here is my hack system: I have some chores and some silly things written on theses sticks. They have to close their eyes, and pick a stick out of the tin. Do whatever is on the stick, and you get 15 mins of game time. They can pick up to two sticks at a time and have half an hour of game time. This way the chores are still getting done, and the game time can still happen. It’s a win win for everyone. Game time struggles are here that’s just a fact. If you have kids and they have friends chances are they are being exposed to video games and craving them. It’s almost unavoidable. It became time for me to hack the system!

Not everyday is easy, but everyday is a blessing.

Here on our channel I create a lot of homeschooling content. We are currently using The Good and The Beautiful curriculum for language arts and history.

For math we are really enjoying teaching textbooks. I heard about teaching textbooks through some other amazing homeschooling mamas and we have really grown to love it.
