Legacy Conversations - SF - Gen Bornman - Episode 12 – Officer Commanding Messina Region

Brigadier General Cornelius Jansen Bornman speaks to us about his distinguished career in the South African Army. He started in 1965 in the Army Gymnasium. Sixteen years were in command positions - the last as Commanding General – Special Forces Brigade (1995-1999). He also completed various staff courses which are rated higher than an MBA by me.

In this episode, he talks of his time as Commander of the Messina Region which is right next to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. In later years he would return to this region when commanding the Special Forces Brigade. The area was then used as a training theatre after access to Fort Doppies (Caprivi) was lost. It was not an easy command. Times were changing politically but a serious terrorist threat existed. Considerable skills were needed on all levels. Indeed, a fascinating conversation with a senior officer explaining the measures taken to safeguard all citizens. We also discuss tribalism in Africa and the Army and the changes that came after Mr Mandela was released. If you have questions for the General, leave them below.
