Driving Into Toronto on the Gardiner Expressway East

Come along for a drive into Toronto on the epic, colourful, busy Gardiner Expressway East. Eight to ten lanes wide and elevated, sometimes brushing past condos within feet, the Gardiner is a thrilling, interesting ride. You can see the CN Tower as you approach downtown.
Construction began in 1955. There was originally a debate as the initial plan would mean taking down Fort York National Historic Site, but in the end (thankfully) it did not go through the site. The site was saved. On July 29, 1957 -as construction was underway - some individuals proposed a renaming of the route. It shouldn't be called "Lakeshore Expressway," they said. This was based on the suggestion of Weston Mayor Harry Clark (committee chairman). So, the Metro Toronto Roads and Traffic Committee changed the name from Lakeshore Expressway to the F. G. Gardiner Freeway. Except they ultimately changed the name to Expressway. Why? Clark said that the road had too many interchanges to be called a freeway. The Metro Council gave the green light to the name - and now we have the "Gardiner Expressway."
What billboard do you see along the Gardiner Expressway? Is it less busy in 2021? Watch to see! Do you ever commute to Toronto along the Gardiner Expressway? Have you ever travelled along this busy thoroughfare?
The Gardiner Expressway is an engineering feat, and a big part of Canadian history. So many millions of people travel along it with so many stories. The Gardiner Expressway is part of the Canadian and Ontarian and Toronto story.
