This Top Gun: Maverick review does include spoilers. Pete Mitchell is back, and he's once again battling a nameless foe who possesses the most advanced technology in the world. Yes, that means we are talking about Top Gun: Maverick. And there's a lot to be said about this film.

The original Top Gun was oddly apolitical for a film about the American military. The enemy is faceless and geopolitical stakes are largely invisible. The battle depicted in the first Top Gun most closely resembles the Gulf of Sidra incident, in which a Libyan Su-22 fighter fought a US F-14 Tomcat launched from the USS Nimitz. As it happens in the film, Libya starts the battle by firing an air-to-air missile, which misses the American plane. The Americans returned fire with an AIM-9L “Sidewinder” missile, destroying both Libyan fighters.
