Sunday Longplay - 30XX (Steam Early Access Alpha Demo)

This week on Sunday Longplay, the sequel to the Mega Man-style roguelike 20XX just dropped on Steam in Early Access, so let's check it out! Welcome to the new millennium of 30XX!

This game is more or less the same as its predecessor - play as either Nina or Ace and jump and shoot (or slash) through a series of procedurally-generated stages that are never the same twice and collect currency to upgrade your characters! You can also increase the difficulty through modifiers (similar to the skulls in 20XX), but this game also rewards you more for doing so, which is a welcome addition.

30XX also changes how the core upgrades work. In 20XX when you pick up a new core upgrade you would lose the old one. But now, you can keep all of the core upgrades you collect and you can swap out which one you want to use. You only have a limited number of core slots to use, and some core upgrades use up more slots than others.

Another new addition is the level editor, where you can create your own levels and send them to the internet. However, this game's level editor doesn't work like other editors like Super Mario Maker or even Mega Man Maker. In this game (and 20XX), levels are made out of random sets of pre-crafted segments, and you can craft your own stage segments.

The current demo version only has 6 stages, but more will be added as development continues. I also took it upon myself to play the game with the Marathon modifier turned on all the way up, which is why the stages are longer than usual!
