The Declaration of Independence is one of the most misunderstood documents in American history. Misconceptions about the document don't emerge from disdain or antipathy, typically, but they do emerge from a superficial understanding of it's tenets. Many will reduce it to a "break-up letter" between the nascent American government and the British Empire, while others will simply admire it's rebellious nature.
