How I made an old Manequin into a Bust Sculpture | Timelapse | Upcycling

Back in October 1995 (I was in grade 5 and 10 years old then), I joined the 2nd John Hay Development Corporation (JPDC) Annual Art Contest. It was open to elementary, high school and college students of Baguio City. I competed under Category A which was for 7-10 years old. That year the theme revolved around preserving the environment and gave emphasis on the flowers of the Cordillera region. It was an unforgettable experience for me since it was the first major art competition I won. I got a cash prize of P5,000 which was a considerable amount back then, a huge trophy (half my height) and a trip to Vigan along with my fellow winners. It was also during our batch of winners where the official logo of the first Baguio Flower Festival was chosen, a spray of sunflowers by Trisha Tabangin, one of the winners of Category B from Baguio City National High School. Unknowingly, I was a part of a tradition in the making and over the years, the Baguio Flower Festival (renamed as Panagbenga or season of blossoming on its second year) which is celebrated month-long every February, got bigger and better. Last year and even this year, it is unfortunate that we were not able to celebrate it like we used to because of the COVID-19 health crisis. I thought of making a mixed media or 2021 version of my winning artwork in 1995. This piece is called, “Metamorphosis”.
